CNC machining is an integral part of everyday manufacturing operations. Providing numerous benefits, CNC machining creates a variety of high-quality components with efficiency and precision. Skilled CNC Specialists are required to ensure operations run smoothly from initial design to final product.

Learn more about our CNC Specialists:

Programmers and operators are essential to the CNC process. Working directly with the CNC machinery, they translate design, tolerance and dimension specifications into coding the machines understand.

Design engineers are responsible for perfecting techniques regarding dimensions and tolerances. These techniques properly set up work pieces scheduled to be machined.

Tool engineers design fixtures and cutting tools used in conjunction with machining.

Quality control personnel ensure CNC-machined parts meet specifications, inspecting them for inconsistencies and stabilizing production processes.

Production leaders and managers create realistic production schedules for CNC machining. They communicate with fellow workers throughout the process to ensure turn-around times
are met.

CNC Milling - Did You Know?

Did You Know?
CNC milling allows for precision cuts, with accuracy as close as .0001 of an inch.

CNC milling machines are precise and efficient in cutting materials into the most basic or complex shapes. CNC mills manufacture a diverse range of components, including parts for engines, dies, mold tooling, and other complex mechanisms. In fact, almost anything can be made on a CNC mill.

Benefits of CNC milling include:

Reliability - Automated machines perform repetitive operations faster than "manual" machines.

Precision - Machines cut with accuracy as close as .0001 of an inch.

Chip Conveyors - Assist in quick and easy scrap removal.

Coolant Systems - Allow for aggressive material cutting while keeping heat under control.

CNC milling is the most common form of CNC (computer numerical control) machining. Depending on the orientation of the main spindle, CNC milling machines are classified as horizontal or vertical. One of the main performance factors of a CNC milling machine is its number of axes. CNC mills generally have three axes. Additional axes allow mills to produce work with increased flexibility.

CNC Turning - Did You Know?

Did You Know?
CNC turning is the most basic and cost-effective way to manufacture symmetrical parts from round stock.

CNC turning produces parts by rotating round bar stock material and feeding a cutting tool into the turning material. CNC materials include:

Aluminum

Acetal

Acrylic

Brass

Bronze

Copper

Nylon

Polycarbonate

Teflon

Titanium

PVC

Stainless

Steel

Sterling Silver

and more

Almost any shape can be produced on a CNC turning center, starting with the basic round shapes and progressing to intricately milled components. Unlike traditional lathes, turning centers with live tooling allow for asymmetrical parts to be produced — not just symmetrical parts. All of the parts shown in the above picture were produced on our turning centers.

About ITAR

ITAR regulates the export and import of defense articles, services and information. Its goal is to safeguard U.S. National Security and further U.S. foreign policy objectives. ITAR was enacted in 1976 during the Cold War. The purpose of U.S. ITAR regulations is to ensure that foreign countries, or foreign nationals working for companies in the U.S., do not have access to any of the designs generated by military vendors or customers. U.S. Government enforcement activities have increased dramatically since 1999.
To learn more about Plouse Precision Manufacturing, visit us at PlouseManufacturing.com.

2011 Starts with Strong Demand for Contract Manufacturing

This year is off to a great start at Plouse Precision Manufacturing with significant increases in orders for all of our client segments. There are numerous reasons for continued optimism as many indicators point to growth for most sectors of the manufacturing industry and general economy. Even so, adopting a new attitude can be tough when it feels safer to remain skeptical.

Here are a few reasons to have a new and positive outlook on manufacturing in 2011:

1. Expanding factory activity. January’s manufacturing activity accelerated at the fastest pace in almost seven years, thanks to new orders received by U.S. manufacturers. The Institute for Supply Management’s factory index jumped to 60.8, the highest level since May 2004.

2. Increased spending and investments. According to the U.S. Commerce Department, consumer spending continues to increase for autos, appliances and other goods. Increasing business investments in industrial machinery and computers also support trends of economic growth.

3. Rising overseas sales. American factories are reporting a rise in exports reaching the highest level since December 1988.

4. Extended tax breaks. Economists expect legislation responsible for cutting Social Security taxes to boost consumer spending. In addition, extended tax breaks for businesses purchasing new machinery and equipment will benefit manufacturing companies.

5. Growing confidence. Signs of an improving economy, such as expanding production and increased exports, continue to develop confidence and promote a positive outlook. Since manufacturing accounts for about 11 percent of the economy, hope generated by the industry is widespread.

Measuring Success

Our success is measured by our clients' success. As contract manufacturing professionals we are dedicated to delivering high-quality service, innovation and manufacturing excellence. So how do we ensure client success? Here are a few of the attributes that support our efforts:

Manufacturing Competitiveness

The status of the United State’s Manufacturing industry is a hot topic among economists, in their never-ending quest to determine the status of both the country’s and world’s economic standings. While some claim U.S. manufacturing is losing strength compared to other countries, others say the data for these claims just do not exist.

With the U.S. economy on an upswing, a recent article noted economists and forecasters seem caught in a mindset where the slightest negative indicator, regarding any industry, sends them panicking. Instead of recognizing the normal rhythms and bumps experienced during any recovery, a case of economic hypochondria has taken hold. (Financial Post; July 8, 2010)

Other reports reinforce the perspective that there’s no need to panic. In an appropriately titled article, U.S. Manufacturing Isn’t a Thing of the Past... figures show that “approximately 286,000 manufacturing firms currently operate in the U.S. and produce 22% of global manufacturing output, the largest percentage of any country.” (Business Wire; July 8, 2010)

Manufacturing Matters (And this never changed.)

Despite its historic importance, at some point over the past decade individuals began to recede from the idea of pursuing manufacturing as a career. While the country stopped seeing it as the significant industry it was in past eras, here at Plouse, we can't help but ask, why...?

Here is a reminder to ourselves [and others within the industry], why manufacturing is so important to us and why careers in manufacturing should still be pursued and respected.

Many professions rely on manufacturing to turn their visions into reality. An engineer, scientist or architect may create a revolutionary design, but without manufacturers to transform the idea into a product, it merely stays an 'idea.' It is the hands-on work of those in the manufacturing industry who take the idea to the next level.

Manufacturing Role in the Economy
Manufacturing also plays a significant role in the economy here in the U.S. and globally. Manufacturing activity helps set the pace for the general economy. With exports up and factories hard at work, U.S. manufacturing is helping lead the country's economic recovery. Economists track the status of the manufacturing industry use as an indicator concerning the future of the general economy.

Recent figures from the U.S. Commerce Department show that U.S. manufacturing is growing at its fastest rate in six years. "At the moment, manufacturing is the leading star of the economic rebound and economists are predicting that will continue for the rest of the year, helping to offset weakness in other areas." (Time Magazine; May 5, 2010)

Other news outlets echo economists' manufacturing trend statistics stating, "Improbable as it seems, the brightest spot so far in the nation's spotty economic recovery is a sector long considered all but dead — good-old-fashioned manufacturing." (Los Angeles Times; May 10, 2010)

Optimistic Future
At Plouse, we are optimistic about the manufacturing industry's strong and positive impact on our country's recovery. For more than 50 years, we've continued to live and breathe manufacturing, understanding the importance of our work.

Plouse Precision Manufacturing Helps ‘Set the Stage’ for Major Recording Artist

-- Reputation for client success leads to critical role because the-show-must-go-on --

HARRISBURG, Pa. – June 10, 2010 – Plouse Precision Manufacturing (PlouseManufacturing.com), one of the nation’s leading precision contract manufacturers, announced today the delivery of specialized, custom-manufactured parts which are critical to the staging for a major summer
concert tour.

Originally contacted by Tait Towers, a set design firm located in Pennsylvania, Plouse welcomed the unique opportunity to help design and manufacture one-of-a-kind stage parts. In spite of schedule changes and tightened deadlines, the parts were tested and delivered ahead of schedule.

"Though the nature of the project was unique, our capabilities were a perfect fit with the necessary skills. We manufactured the stage parts in less than one week, once the design was finalized. It was a rush project, but we pulled our experienced team together and stayed focused on our client’s ultimate success," said Dale Seitz, president of Plouse Precision Manufacturing.

Both the design firm and recording artist are pleased with the finished product. “Their performance was top notch!" said Ed Kropewnicki with Tait Towers. “We thank Plouse for being flexible and able to speed-up production, helping complete the stage within the allotted time frame."

The concert artist’s name must remain confidential. Suffice it to say, many members of the Plouse Precision Manufacturing team enjoyed seeing their work in action when the concert tour recently stopped for a performance near Harrisburg.

Cost vs. Quality vs. On-Time Delivery

How do you rank cost, quality and on-time delivery when it comes to your manufacturing needs?

Defining the Factors

Before answering this question, let’s first define cost, quality and on-time delivery. Although cost can be measured in several ways, in this discussion cost is defined as the price of the part, not the total cost of ownership (TCO). Quality is the overall value and usefulness of the product or service. This may include features, durability, reliability and any number of factors which impact value. Lastly, on-time delivery refers to the manufacturing company delivering the final product or part to you on-time.

Possible Solutions

In today’s struggling economy, you may place cost as the top priority, but sacrificing quality and on-time delivery does not seem like the right solution. We all grow up learning it’s no secret that the least expensive product is usually not the highest in quality when purchasing any type of product or service. A product on the shelf may catch your eye because it only costs half the amount of the others, but you can’t help your suspicions and ask what was sacrificed to create such a low price tag.

Denying the importance of on-time delivery may seem like the easiest answer, yet what good is an inexpensive product of high quality, that isn’t ready on-time? If a manufacturing part isn’t delivered by the deadline, you’re not going to be pleased regardless of the cost or quality. Yet, when looking for the best possible quality in a product, time may be of no importance to you.

Your order of priorities may be determined by what you are lacking, or conversely, what you have in abundance. For instance, when money is abundant, cost may be less important, and when a deadline is pressing and time is scarce, on-time delivery may rank highest.

And The Winner Is…

Now it’s time to tell us, how do you rank cost, quality and on-time delivery when it comes to your manufacturing needs? This question of importance is complex, and the answer ever-changing as conditions concerning the economy and industry evolve. But, it is still an important question for manufacturing companies to be aware of in order to please you, our customer. To some degree, balance is always required to retain a competitive edge. At the same time, your individual situation may determine what factor takes precedent. But, when it comes down to cost, quality and on-time delivery, does one factor inevitably hold a consistent place as the top priority?

Share your thoughts with us; how do you rank cost, quality and on-time delivery?

Single-Source Manufacturer Assures Quality, Compliance of Sub-Contractors

As a contract manufacturing company and single-source manufacturer, Plouse Precision Manufacturing delivers turnkey solutions for components and assemblies to meet clients' specific needs. To produce the on-time, on-budget results for our customers, Plouse has assembled a small but highly qualified team of sub-contractors that complements our in-house capabilities.

Plouse considers sub-contractors to be an integral part of the services we offer. We only contract work out to sub-contractors that are leaders in their particular specialty and also committed to following our clients' guidelines.

The communication of clients' needs and requirements is essential in making the flow of work efficient and cost effective. Plouse uses a combination of techniques to ensure the success of the project and ultimately our clients:

The processes and quality of all sub-contractors are continuously monitored.

Our staff regularly visits all sub-contractors.

Shipments are tracked to ensure on-time delivery to customers.

In addition, Plouse employsSupply Chain Management (SCM). This cross-functional and cost-effective approach ensures that production will not be delayed and the transition from raw material to finished part is a smooth process.

SCM has several components:

1. Managing Resources -- Plouse has a strategy for managing all the resources needed to meet customers demands. This applies to resources inside both the Plouse facility and those of its sub-contractors.

2. Integrating Sub-contractors -- Plouse has assembled a stable group of sub-contractors who are seamlessly integrated into our internal logistics from pricing to delivery.

3. Production to Delivery -- Plouse oversees every aspect of a project, no matter if it is completed in-house or at one of our sub-contractors. This supervision includes production, testing, and preparing the finished parts for delivery.

Plouse Precision Manufacturing is a successful single-source manufacturer, in part because we have pulled together an outstanding team of sub-contractors. By coordinating their specialties with our own in-house abilities, Plouse has again and again met and exceeded customers’ needs and timelines.

US Manufacturing in the Current Global Economy - Employing New Technologies to Better the Bottom Line

A few decades ago, an economic down-turn was more than likely to be confined to a certain country or region. Now, in part due to technological advances in the transportation industry, the world has shrunk, and we find ourselves linked more rigidly to the economies of many other countries. Surviving in this environment (we can do little to change) is a challenge with which many small business owners are struggling. Certainly, hourly rates in other countries are often only a fraction of what they are in the United States.

Two of our Mori Seiki machining centers are linked to a 14-position pallet pool, which helps minimize costs and set-ups on high volume production jobs.

So, how do we compete?

At Plouse Precision Manufacturing, we believe employing the newest technologies is a step in the right direction. "Re-investment of company profit in first-rate equipment helps keep us competitive," Dale Seitz, President of Plouse Precision Manufacturing remarks. "We need to be able to produce our parts faster and more efficiently than the next manufacturing facility to give the best prices to our customers".

This philosophy allows us to deliver to our customers the quality service they have come to expect when placing an order with Plouse. We believe the following policies, along with others, have been the cornerstones of our success during the current recession:

We have installed only Mori Seiki CNC Milling and Turning centers in our machining departments.

Our CAD/CAM software is current with the latest releases.

The Tooling Sales Representatives at Plouse take initiative in recommending the newest advanced cutting tools available on the market directly to our operators.

Our contract manufacturing center in Harrisburg, PA combines 50+ years of trusted experience, state-of-the-art precision manufacturing equipment and the relentless dedication to our clients' success that is synonymous with the Plouse name.

Penn State Hershey Medical Center - Community Investment Taken to Heart

Community Investment Program

For the last year and a half, Plouse Precision Manufacturing has been manufacturing parts for Penn State's Division of Artificial Organs. They pioneered the research and development of an artificial heart prototype within the walls of the Penn State Hershey Medical Center. The goal of the artificial heart is to replace a irreversibly failing heart. This will inevitably decrease the death rate associated with heart disease. In the United States, death rates for heart disease are dropping overall, while the presence of risk factors for developing heart disease is increasing.

"Plouse Precision Manufacturing plays a critical role in the manufacture of our parts for cardiovascular support research," said Bryan Fritz, Research Assistant at Penn State University M.S. Hershey Medical Center. "Be it a one-time design, a multi-part run, or help in reverse engineering, Plouse consistently delivers the highest quality machined parts. We look forward to our continued working relationship."

Penn State Hershey Medical Center

Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is committed to enhancing the quality of life through improved health, the discovery of knowledge that will benefit all, and the professional preparation of those who serve the health needs of others.

The Penn State Heart is implanted, along with a controller and energy transmission system in the space left by removal of the patient's heart. It is a completely implantable, totally electric artificial heart. Once the system is implanted in the patient, no wires, tubes or other connections protrude through the skin.

The result of nearly 30 years of research, the Penn State Heart is one of the most successful devices to emerge from a program supported by the U.S. National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. The device is expected to enter clinical trials in two years.

Giving Back

Dave Smith says: "It is our belief here at Plouse that as we prosper, we also have a responsibility to give back to the local community," states Dave Smith, Sales Manager at Plouse Precision Manufacturing. "That is why we manufacture parts for this program at cost, in the hope that the prototype will come to fruition and countless lives can be changed through everyone's efforts."

Plouse Precision Manufacturing has a relentless commitment to success for every client and to our community. We stand behind every product 100% with over 50 years of quality, innovation and problem solving experience, and we are proud to stand behind our community. We understand how serious heart disease is in the United States and are honored to assist in the Penn State Hershey Medical Center research process. The staff at Plouse looks forward to assisting them in future research projects.</ P>

What is a Contract Manufacturer?

Acontract manufacturer (CM) is a firm that manufactures components or products for another "hiring" firm. Contract manufacturing may include a single precision part or a complex subassembly of the finished product.

In contract manufacturing, the hiring firm - the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) - approaches a contract manufacturer like Plouse Precision Manufacturing, with a design or formula. The OEM is the company that owns the legal rights to a product. A contract manufacturer that is responsible to supply parts directly to the OEM would be considered a first tier supplier. The CM will quote the parts based on material costs, tooling/fixturing, labor, and secondary processes. Once the OEM selects a source, the CM acts as the hiring firm's factory, producing and shipping units of the design on their behalf.

Many companies use contract manufacturing as an alternative to the expense of operating and maintaining their own factories. At our Harrisburg facility, we provide a unique value to OEMs. From CNC machining, grinding, assembly and fabrication to inspection and testing, Plouse provides a full spectrum of manufacturing services.

Plouse offers a set of cost-effective, leading edge solutions and platforms that deliver high performance, differentiated products to their clients. In the increasingly high-pressure environment of manufacturing, outsourcing has become a way of survival for many companies. CMs are utilized in today's cost competitive environment for their ability to drive cost out of the production of products through manufacturing efficiencies. Passing on a lower part cost to the OEM allows them to be competitive in today's global marketplace. As a single-source supplier, we are able to serve a variety of OEM companies and deliver products in accordance with the customer's requirements.

OEMs can rely on Plouse in the following ways:

Metal Stamping - Original Service Still Offered After 50+ Years

Stamping is a metal fabrication process that uses a mechanical or hydraulic press and hardened tool steels to adapt the configuration of a piece of material to a customer's requirements. The hardened tool steels are mounted in a die set, typically as an upper and lower die, which in turn is mounted in the press. The material can then be guided into the die set in an automated fashion via a de-coiler and straightener, or manually, one blank at a time. As the press closes the tool steels engage the material, changing its shape to produce the part. The dies themselves can range from a simple "one-hit die" performing a single operation, to a "compound die" performing multiple operations with one press stroke, to a complex progressive die indexing the part from station to station, changing the configuration of the part with each stroke of the press.

Plouse specializes in both high and low volume metal stamping production using a variety of materials that range from .005" to .250" thick. Metals that we typically stamp include: aluminum, brass, copper, steel (galvanized, hot rolled or cold rolled), stainless steel and titanium. The Metal Stamping Department here at Plouse, houses a variety of presses with tonnages ranging from a 5 ton table top press to a 120 ton floor standing model. All dies are designed, built and maintained in-house by our master toolmakers.

The benefits of the metal stamping operations at Plouse include:

Our Verson model 5B27 press was recently rebuilt to ensure repeated accuracy for the most demanding jobs.

Many of our presses are fitted with a dedicated coil feed and straightener to minimize set-up costs.

We offer a full range of secondary operations that tie in with metal stamping, including CNC machining, painting, welding and assembly.

Reverse Engineering - An Important Capability in State-of-the-Art Manufacturing

The dictionary defines reverse engineering as "the process of studying or analyzing the principles of a device, object or system to further document its structure, function and operation."

In state-of-the-art manufacturing, the process of reverse engineering involves analyzing a part down to the smallest detail, in order to make a solid model and/or 2-D drawing to aid in re-manufacturing. We establish the parameters and features of a part through the use of a CMM (coordinate measuring machine) and wide array of manual inspection equipment. Once this is complete, the information is transferred to a CAD engineer who recreates the recorded geometry into an electronic file format via SolidWorks 2009. The measurements take form as an electronic solid model mimicking all aspects of the original part. This model can be easily converted to a 2-D drawing, then fully dimensioned and toleranced for use on the manufacturing floor.

Plouse offers reverse engineering for these common situations:

A particular part is needed by our customer; however documentation has been lost or was never written.

An old or obsolete machine can be re-engineered in an electronic format prior to a re-build, upgrade or repair.

Reverse engineering is not only about bringing an old part back to life, but about using this technology as a launch pad for the future. At Plouse, not only are we able to document an existing part for manufacture, but with planning and forethought, we can evaluate and re-design complex machines and assemblies for fit, functionality, proposed improvements and cost reduction.

Our Capabilities and Services

Plouse Precision Manufacturing is more than just manufacturing. During our 50+ years, we have perfected a comprehensive set of end-to-end services, ensuring our customers high quality and low cost manufacturing. Whether your needs are for a quick turn-around on a small parts run or a more complex multi-process component or assembly, Plouse is able to handle the job. Listed below are highlights of services we offer:

Plouse Precision Manufacturing uses wire electrical discharge machining (wire EDM) to produce precision parts for any application. We serve a variety of markets such as aerospace, medical, defense, automotive and electric/semiconductor manufacturing, which require wire EDM to achieve high accuracy and tighter tolerances.

Wire EDM at our Harrisburg Location

Utilizing our wire EDMs, we can produce and repeat the required specifications with ease. EDM is a non-traditional method of removing material by a series of rapidly recurring electric arcing discharges between an electrode (the cutting tool) and the work piece, in the presence of an energetic electric field. The machines electrical energized thin brass wire can slice through any electrically conductive material, including difficult-to-machine metals. Wire EDM machines use rapid, controlled, repetitive spark discharges to create intricate profiles.

Electrical Discharge Machining only works with materials that are electrically conductive and generally those materials are ferrous alloys. The wire-cut process uses water as its dielectric with the water's resistivity and other electrical properties carefully controlled by filters and deionizer units. The water also serves the critical purpose of flushing the cut debris away from the cutting zone. Wire EDM surfaces are smooth with a matte appearance, and the edges of the finished work piece have virtually no burrs. Surface finishes are typically between 16 and 64 micro inches, but can be as fine as 10 micro inches. The latest model we use for wire EDM orders is the Fanuc Robocut a-1ic.

Just a few of the benefits of wire EDM include:

Parts are produced more economically than conventional machining.

The need for grinding or other finishing procedures is eliminated.

Wire EDM is an economical replacement for "form grinding."

The parts can be "stacked" to machine multiple parts at once.

The machines have complex geometry capabilities.

Finished products have burr-free edges.

Hardened materials can be cut with ease.

Manufacturing News

To be competitive in today's market and successful during this recession, it is important to take advantage of every possible cost-saving procedure. Wire EDM reduces costs for manufacturing parts by alleviating the costly setups associated with the complicated machining procedures.
Horizontal CNC Milling

Plouse Precision Manufacturing is a leading single source manufacturer utilizing innovative solutions for manufacturing components and assemblies. Our Harrisburg facility contains a variety of CNC milling machines, including the latest Horizontal CNC Milling machine, the Mori-Seiki NH4000. CNC Milling is a cutting process in which material is removed from a block by a rotating tool. Plouse uses Horizontal CNC Milling for customers in a variety of industries, such as aerospace, automotive, medical and defense. For these industries and others, we create engine components, custom and mold tooling, complex mechanisms and enclosures, as well as customized parts.

Horizontal CNC Milling at our Harrisburg Location

We recently integrated our two Mori-Seiki NH4000 horizontal machining centers (HMC's) with a 14 station carrier pallet pool system (CPP) into one entity known as a cell. The cell allows Plouse to provide its customers a better value by reducing the different types of "idle" time. This type of machining efficiently produces parts of different sizes, complexities and quantities. The average parts produced in a given project, run from a few hundred pieces to over 10,000 pieces. The cell is designed for small to medium sized parts, although larger parts can be accommodated. The cell controller is the "brain" of the cell., storing all the programs and necessary information required for the HMC's to make the parts. The controller creates a graphical display of the cell layout that shows in real time what is happening in the cell and if there are any problems. The benefits of Horizontal CNC Milling include, but are not limited to, the following:

Downtime is minimized in the cell, as the operator is able to change parts, as well as change and create set-ups of other projects, while the machines are working on other pallets.

Reduced cost for Plouse's clients by having the ability to leave a job set-up and "ready to run" for future jobs. This saves on unnecessary downtime and helps reduce costly inventory for our company, as well as our clients.

Lead times are shorten, as the cell is able to group some parts together as a "family."

Longer tool life and higher machining speeds are possible, as gravity allows the machine chip to fall away from the cutting area.

Manufacturing News
With the nation's manufacturing activity at a 26-year low, manufacturing companies are realizing that in order to survive they must introduce innovative products and services. Plouse Precision Manufacturing has done just that, with one of the newest, highly innovative machines, the RoboCrib1000.This high security machine, helps with inventory control, quality and efficiency of tools and supplies.

Plouse puts themselves ahead of competitors with our state-of-the-art equipment, years of combined experience and a relentless commitment to each client. Our focus is on precision, innovation, quality and a quick turnaround.
